Hurricane Humberto
September 12-15, 2007
On September 13, 2007, Hurricane Humberto made landfall as a category one storm about 60 miles southeast of Houston, Texas. The storm intensified more rapidly within its first 18 hours of making landfall than any other tropical storm. NC4’s coverage of Hurricane Humberto began as it formed in the Gulf of Mexico and ended when it dissipated over Georgia.
As Hurricane Humberto traveled northeast from High Island, Texas into Louisiana, it left over 100,000 people without power in Beaumont, Texas. Large-scale flooding and heavy structural damage were reported in various coastal cities, prompting Texas Governor Rick Perry to declare the counties of Jefferson, Orange and Galveston disaster areas. Several oil refineries in Texas reported a decline in oil production due to power outages, causing an increase in the price of oil. The storm also caused flooding in parts of Louisiana wherein a state of emergency was consequently declared. As Hurricane Humberto began dissipating, its remnants spawned off eight confirmed tornados in the southeast. There was at least one reported death associated with the storm.
